L’Assunzione di Maria al cielo è un dogma di fede della Chiesa cattolica romana, secondo il quale Maria, madre di Gesù Cristo Dio, al termine della sua vita terrena, andò in Paradiso in anima e corpo. Questo culto si è sviluppato a partire almeno dal V secolo d.C. diffondendosi e radicandosi nella devozione popolare. Il 1º novembre 1950, Papa Pio XII, avvalendosi dell’infallibilità papale, proclamò il dogma con la costituzione apostolica Munificentissimus Deus con la seguente formula: «La Vergine Maria, completato il corso della sua vita terrena, fu assunta alla gloria celeste in anima e corpo»
